L’informatica è la disciplina che si occupa della gestione e dell’elaborazione delle informazioni tramite i calcolatori elettronici. Oggi, questa scienza è profondamente diversa dalle sue origini: si è evoluta rapidamente, abbracciando nuove tecnologie e applicazioni che modellano il mondo moderno. Tra gli ambiti più affascinanti troviamo i big data, la business intelligence, il cloud computing, la computer grafica, l’alta prestazione di calcolo, la ricerca operativa, il calcolo parallelo e i dispositivi mobili. L’informatica non è solo teoria: è un’esperienza pratica che ci permette di interagire con sistemi complessi e di comprendere meglio il mondo digitale che ci circonda.

Con la crescente dipendenza dai dati da parte delle nuove tecnologie, le modalità di accesso, di utilizzo e di condivisione dei dati stanno diventando sempre più importanti su scala globale. La maggior parte di queste infrastrutture cloud è di proprietà privata. Amazon, Google, Meta e Microsoft detengono oltre la metà dei centri dati iper-scala del mondo e presto queste aziende possederanno più di 30 collegamenti via cavo a lunga distanza con ogni continente, consolidando le informazioni con il potere.

With the increasing reliance on data by new technologies, the ways in which data is accessed, used and shared are becoming increasingly important on a global scale. Most of this cloud infrastructure is privately owned. Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft own more than half of the world's hyper-scale data centers, and soon these companies will own more than 30 long-distance cable links to each continent, consolidating information with power.

Cloud computing works in much the same way. (...)
