Decision Taking.

Prendere le decisioni.

  Sometimes in decision-making processes, for example those during which a new strategy to be implemented must be established, misunderstandings occur due to the fact that, while some people involved in the process think that the decision is already consolidated, others are still elaborating a definitive decision.

  This is precisely the subtle distinction between "decision-making" and "decision taking", the existence of which many do not realize. The term "decision-making" refers to the process to make decisions, while the term "decision taking" refers to final act of the process, that is the actual assumption of the decision.

  A volte nei processi decisionali, ad esempio quelli durante i quali si deve stabilire una nuova strategia da attuare, si verificano malintesi dovuti al fatto che, mentre alcune persone coinvolte nel processo pensano che la decisione sia già consolidata, altre stanno ancora elaborando un definitivo decisione.

  Questa è proprio la sottile distinzione tra "decision-making" e "decision taking", della cui esistenza molti non si rendono conto. Il termine "Decision-Making" si riferisce al processo decisionale, mentre il termine "decision taking" si riferisce all'atto finale del processo, ossia all'effettiva assunzione della decisione.

  "Decision-Making" is a process and happens over a period of time. A decision, on the other hand, is taken at a moment, in an instance.  The decision is taken at the moment the choice is made from all the available options. So, Decision-Making, precedes the Decision-Taking.

  Il "Decision-Making" è un processo ed avviene in un lasso di tempo. Una decisione invece è presa (taken) in un momento, in un istante. La decisione è presa nel momento in cui si effettua la scelta tra tutte le opzioni disponibili. Quindi, il Decision-Making precede il Decision Taking.

  It is very easy to identify when a decision can be considered to have finally been made. Think for example when a proposal is put to the vote during a meeting: well, even when the solution seems to have been taken, even when the decision has been established and announced by the boss, it is not certain that the decision has actually been taken yet.

  In fact, sometimes due to the haste with which decision making often takes place, some people involved in the process may misunderstand the decision, they may still have doubts about the actions related to the application of the decision itself, and the consequences that would derive from such actions.

  A decision can be considered finally "taken" when all the people involved in the decision-making process are aligned and convinced about the solution to choose and the actions to be taken. A decision can be considered "taken" when the last doubt has been evaded.

  E' molto facile individuare quando una decisione può essere considerata finalmente presa. Si pensi ad esempio quando si mette ai voti una proposta durante una riunione: bene, anche quando la soluzione sembra essere stata presa, anche quando la decisione è stata stabilita ed annunciata dal capo, non è detto che la decisione sia stata ancora presa effettivamente.

  Infatti, talvolta a causa della fretta con cui spesso si svolge il processo decisionale (decision making), alcune persone coinvolte nel processo potrebbero fraintendere la decisione, potrebbero avere ancora dubbi sulle azioni connesse alla applicazione della decisione stessa, e sulle conseguenze che deriverebbero da tali azioni.

  Una decisione può essere considerata finalmente "presa" quando tutte le persone coinvolte nel processo decisionale sono allineate e convinte sulla soluzione da scegliere e sulle azione da intraprendere. Una decisione può essere considerata "presa" quando l'ultimo dubbio è stato eluso.

  During the decision-making processes, the most effective teams are those who are able in a lucid and conscious way to recognize and keep in mind where they are in the decision-making process, i.e. how they are proceeding with the decision, and the content of the decision, i.e. the substance of what they are deciding. To determine when decision making can finally converge towards a solution, you need to constantly monitor where you are in the process, both individually and collectively.

  Durante i processi decisionali i team più efficaci sono quelli che riescono in modo lucido e cosciente a riconoscere e tenere ben presente dove si trovano nel processo decisionale, ossia come stanno procedendo nella decisione, ed il contenuto della decisione, ossia la sostanza di cosa stanno decidendo. Per stabilire quando il processo decisionale può finalmente convergere verso una soluzione occorre monitorare costantemente dove ci si trova nel processo, sia individualmente che collettivamente.

  Sometimes one of the team members is so convinced that a decision is correct that in his head, individually therefore, he already considers it as having been made. The problem is that other members may not be sure yet if that is the right thing to do. So others are still making a decision while one has already made it.

  In other circumstances, those who have more say in deciding, such as a CEO, may not be credible and incisive enough in his indications, creating confusion and misleading other members of the decision-making process. Indeed, there are some members in the decision-making process who have greater authority and responsibility than others. Well, these members are required to define the limits within which the decision-making process must be carried out.

  Sometimes the decision involves such uncomfortable positions, such as risk-taking or unpopular actions, that members of the trial, without even realizing it, divert the discussion to other topics forgetting that their goal is to make a decision. Even if it is easier to continue to argue indefinitely, it is necessary to recognize when the time has come to converge towards a solution, despite the actions or risks that its application will entail.

  Talvolta uno dei membri del team è così convinto che una decisione sia corretta che nella sua testa, individualmente quindi, la considera già come presa. Il problema è che altri membri potrebbero non essere ancora sicuri che quella sia la cosa giusta da fare. Quindi altri stanno ancora prendendo una decisione mentre uno l'ha già presa.

  In altre circostanze, chi ha più voce in capitolo per decidere, come per esempio un amministratore delegato, potrebbe non risultare abbastanza credibile ed incisivo nelle sue indicazioni, creando confusione e mandando fuori strada gli altri membri del processo decisionale. In effetti nel processo decisionale esistono alcuni membri che hanno autorità e responsabilità maggiori degli altri. Ebbene tali membri sono tenuti a definire i limiti entro cui il processo decisionale si deve svolgere. 

  Talvolta la decisione implica delle posizioni così scomode, come per esempio l'assunzione di rischi o delle azioni impopolari, che i membri del processo, senza neanche accorgersene, dirottano la discussione su altri argomenti dimenticandosi che il loro obiettivo è quello di prendere una decisione. Anche se è più semplice continuare a discutere all'infinito occorre riconoscere quando è arrivato il momento di convergere verso una soluzione, nonostante le azioni oppure i rischi che la sua applicazione implicherà.

Functional programming languages.

I linguaggi di programmazione Funzionali.

  Programming languages are called functional when the fundamental technique for structuring programs is to use functions. The interesting aspect of functional programming is the ability to construct definitions. The purpose of a definition is to introduce a binding between a name and a value.

  I linguaggi di programmazione sono detti funzionali quando la tecnica fondamentale per strutturare i programmi è quella di utilizzare le funzioni. L'aspetto interessante della programmazione funzionale è la capacità di costruire definizioni. Lo scopo di una definizione è quello di introdurre un legame (binding) tra un nome ed un valore.

  Programming in a functional language consists of constructing definitions that the computer will later use to evaluate expressions and produce the result. Definitions are functions, usually expressed in mathematical terms. Each functional programming language has a series of auxiliary functions ready for solving simple problems, and which can be called up in the construction of a definition.

   In functional programming the calculator acts as a sort of pocket calculator, but with the possibility of expanding the basic capabilities by defining "new" functions.

   The expressions that contain within them the "new" functions, defined by the programmer, are evaluated using the definitions given through simplification rules ('reduction') to convert the expressions into simple forms (that is, not further reducible).

  Programmare in un linguaggio funzionale consiste nel costruire delle definizioni che successivamente il calcolatore utilizzerà per valutare delle espressioni e produrre il risultato. Le definizioni sono delle funzioni, normalmente espressa in termini matematici. Ogni linguaggio di programmazione funzionale possiede  una serie di funzioni ausiliarie già pronte per risolvere problemi semplici, e che possono essere richiamate nella costruzione di una definizione.

  Nella programmazione funzionale il calcolatore agisce come una sorta di una calcolatrice tascabile, ma con la possibilità di ampliare le capacità base per mezzo della definizione di funzioni “nuove”. 

  Le espressioni che contengono al loro interno le funzioni "nuove", definite dal programmatore, sono valutate utilizzando le definizioni date tramite regole di semplificazione (‘riduzione’) per convertire le espressioni in forme semplici (ovvero, non ulteriormente riducibili).

  The simplest definition is that which, by means of the special "let" construct and only the equality symbol "=", associates a value, for example numerical, to a symbol or a name:

Computer Vision based Augmented Reality.

Realtà Aumentata (AR) basata sulla Visione Artificiale.

  Augmented Reality (AR) for the realization of its functionalities uses tools typical of other disciplines, which thanks to AR are experiencing a new era of notoriety and a new field of application, unthinkable until a few years ago. 

  La Augmented Reality (AR) per la realizzazione delle sue funzionalità utilizza strumenti tipici di altre discipline, che grazie alla AR stanno vivendo una nuova era di notorietà ed un nuovo campo applicativo, impensabile fino a qualche anno fa. 

 Indeed, AR technology combines physical environment, digital information and device, to understand the physical world you are in and add relevant digital content in the right place. There is an entire branch of computer science dedicated to this purpose, it is called computer vision, or artificial vision. It is an interdisciplinary field of study that develops algorithms and techniques to allow computers to reproduce functions and processes of the human visual apparatus.

  Infatti, la tecnologia AR combina ambiente fisico, informazioni digitali e device, per comprende il mondo fisico in cui ti trovi e aggiungere contenuti digitali rilevanti nel posto giusto. C’è un intero ramo dell’informatica dedicato a questo scopo, si chiama computer vision, o visione artificiale. È un campo di studi interdisciplinare che elabora algoritmi e tecniche per consentire ai computer di riprodurre funzioni e processi dell’apparato visivo umano.

  To function properly Augmented Reality must understand the world around you, both in terms of semantics and 3D geometry. Therefore, it is not just a question of recognizing objects, people, animals, etc., but of extracting information from reality that is useful for reconstructing a context around them.

  Per funzionare correttamente la Realtà Aumentata deve comprendere il mondo intorno a te, sia in termini di semantica che di geometria 3D. Quindi, non è solo una questione di riconoscere oggetti, persone, animali, ecc., quanto di estrarre dalla realtà le informazioni utili a ricostruire un contesto intorno a loro.

  AR uses the computer vision tools, for example: to identify fiducial markers or points of interest; o for real-time calculation of the position and orientation of the real camera with respect to the reference object (fiducial marker); or to overlay the 3D graphic reconstruction of the model on the marker.

  AR utilizza gli strumenti della visione artificiale, per esempio: per la individuazione dei fiducial markers o dei punti di interesse; o per il calcolo in tempo reale della posizione e dell'orientamento della camera reale rispetto all'oggetto di riferimento (fiducial marker); oppure per sovrapporre (overlay) la ricostruzione grafica 3D del modello al marker.

  Especially in an industrial environment that is characterized by high complexity, and whose quality control process is characterized by numerous and rigid procedures, the use of computer vision for the implementation of an artificial vision application is the best path to follow. . This approach consists in the design and implementation of an algorithm, using development environments that allow you to manage the interaction with acquisition sensors (cameras, GPS, accelerometers), graphics environments for the integration of context information extracted from reality into the images .

  Specie in ambiente industriale che sono caratterizzati da una elevata complessità, ed il cui processo di controllo della qualità è caratterizzato da numerose e rigide procedure, l'utilizzo della computer vision per l'implementazione di una applicazione di visione artificiale è il miglior percorso da seguire. Questo approccio consiste nella progettazione ed implementazione di un algoritmo, utilizzando ambienti di sviluppo che permettono di gestire l'interazione con i sensori di acquisizione (fotocamere, GPS, accelerometri), ambienti di grafica per la integrazione nelle immagini delle informazioni di contesto estratte dalla realtà.

L'apprendimento permanente e continuo.

What a misfortune! Work, which is the activity that keeps us busy for most of our time, and which we cannot ignore, we cannot even choose to our liking, but we can only try to get as close as possible to the job position we aspire to. , taking advantage and making the most of the opportunities that life offers, if and when it offers them.

  Che sventura! Il lavoro, che è l'attività che ci tiene occupati per la maggior parte del nostro tempo, e da cui non possiamo prescindere, non possiamo neanche sceglierlo di nostro gradimento, ma possiamo solo cercare di avvicinarci il più possibile alla posizione lavorativa a cui aspiriamo, approfittando e sfruttando al massimo le opportunità che la vita di offre, se e quando ce le offre.

  Our passions, our hobbies, our hobbies come into play precisely to fill the dissatisfactions caused by a job that does not fully reflect our aspirations and expectations.

Passions, in the small amount of time that work allows us, are used to finally do what we want and to enjoy it.

  Le passioni, i nostri passatempi, i nostri hobby, entrano in gioco per l'appunto per colmare le insoddisfazioni causate da un impiego lavorativo che non rispecchia appieno le nostre aspirazioni ed aspettative.

Le passioni, nell'esiguo tempo che il lavoro ci concede, servono per fare finalmente quello che vogliamo e per trarne piacere.

  The work has recently taken on a high variability: the skills that have allowed us to find a job do not guarantee us to keep that job, much less to find another one. This has not always been the case: the evolution of skills is a phenomenon characteristic of recent times, and which is unprecedented in past history. In fact, until a few decades ago, what was studied and learned at school allowed to carry out the same professional activity for the whole duration of life. Today this is no longer possible. It is easy to realize this by comparing the topics of our study courses with the technologies with which we are forced to measure ourselves every day. The gap is even more evident by observing the skills and specializations mentioned in the job offers: every day new terms are coined to indicate qualifications, skills and specializations of which we sometimes have difficulty even understanding their meaning.

  There is therefore a need to carry out, at the same time as the work activity, a refresher program, which allows us to keep the job or to take advantage of new opportunities.

  Il lavoro recentemente  sta assumendo una alta variabilità: le competenze che ci hanno permesso di trovare un lavoro non ci garantiscono di mantenere quel posto di lavoro, e tanto meno di trovarne un altro. Non è sempre stato così: l'evoluzione delle competenze è un fenomeno caratteristico dei tempi recenti, e che non ha precedenti nella storia passata. Infatti, fino a qualche decennio fa, quello che si studiava e si apprendeva sui banchi di scuola, permetteva di svolgere la stessa attività professionale per tutta la durata della vita. Oggi ciò non è più possibile. E' facile rendersene conto confrontando gli argomenti dei nostri corsi di studio con le tecnologie con cui siamo costretti a misurarci ogni giorno. Il divario è ancora più evidente osservando le competenze e specializzazioni citate nelle offerte di lavoro: ogni giorno sono coniati termini nuovi per indicare qualifiche, competenze e specializzazioni di cui a volta abbiamo difficoltà persino a capirne il significato. 

  Si avverte quindi la necessità di portare avanti, contemporaneamente alla attività lavorativa, un programma di aggiornamento, che ci permetta di mantenere il posto di lavoro oppure di sfruttare nuove opportunità.

  Often, our skills, the result of our studies, and our previous work experiences, are no longer usable (recyclable), at least in the same form in which we learned them.

  Spesso, le nostre competenze, frutto dei nostri studi, e delle nostre esperienze lavorative pregresse, non sono più utilizzabili (riciclabili), perlomeno nella stessa forma in cui le abbiamo apprese.

Even our passions, also partly the result of our educational path, suffer from the same obsolescence of professional skills and work activities. And therefore they too are not spared from the same need for renewal.

Anche le nostre passioni, in parte anch'esse frutto del nostro percorso didattico, soffrono della stessa obsolescenza delle competenze professionali e delle attività lavorative. E quindi anch'esse non sono risparmiate dalla stessa necessità di un rinnovamento.

  We discover that the thing that unites the future of our work, our skills and our passions is the need for continuous renewal. But then, I asked myself: why not convert this necessity into an opportunity? I therefore thought of using the same process of continuous renewal, both for work, for skills and for passions. The idea is to use passions as a motivational drive, to use previous skills and experiences as a basis of knowledge, and to identify future-oriented strategic paths that allow us to improve our competitiveness in the world of work and that allow, perhaps, to be able to aspire to professional jobs that converge towards our passions.

  Scopriamo che la cosa che accomuna il futuro del nostro lavoro, delle nostre competenze e delle nostre passioni è la necessità di rinnovamento continuo. Ma allora, mi sono chiesto: perché non convertire questa necessità in una opportunità? Ho pensato quindi di utilizzare lo stesso processo di rinnovamento continuo, sia per lavoro, sia per le competenze e sia per le passioni. L'idea è quella di utilizzare le passioni come spinta motivazionale, di utilizzare le competenza e le esperienze pregresse come base di conoscenza, e di individuare dei percorsi strategici orientati al futuro che permettano di migliorare la nostra competitività nel mondo del lavoro e che permettano, magari, di poter aspirare ad impieghi professionali che convergano verso le nostre passioni.

  The new renewal model that is needed today is identified with the name "lifelong learning". With this term in fact, we mean an innovative process that involves the use of learning throughout the life course. The term literally means lifelong or continuous learning. Lifelong learning is a philosophy, married individually and intentionally by those who recognize the need to acquire new skills. This process is continuous and lasts a lifetime, adapting from time-to-time to changes in the economy, technology and society.

  Il nuovo modello di rinnovamento che è necessario oggi è identificato con il nome di "lifelong learning". Con questo termine si intende infatti processo innovativo che prevede il ricorso all'apprendimento durante l'intero corso della vita. Il termine significa letteralmente apprendimento permanente o continuo. Il lifelong learning è una filosofia, sposata individualmente ed intenzionalmente da chi riconosce la necessità di acquisire nuove competenze. Questo procedimento è continuo e dura tutta la vita, adattandosi di volta in volta ai cambiamenti dell'economia, della tecnologia e della società.

The heterogeneity of my professional career.

L'eterogeneità della mia carriera professionale.

"A hyper-specialized person who does not develop other interests is more fragile respect to the changes, especially when they occur in their own sector."

  Below I list and describe the stages of my professional career, in reverse chronological order, that is, starting from the most recent experiences and ending with the most remote ones.

  Di seguito elenco e descrivo le tappe delle mio percorso professionali, in ordine cronologico inverso, ossia partendo dalle esperienze più recenti e terminando con quelle più remote.

  The professional path I have traced up to now is very heterogeneous. The beginning of this professional path can be framed temporally in the early years of my adolescence, and coincides with an apprenticeship experience carried out in a mechanical workshop. 

  Il percorso professionale che ho tracciato fino ad oggi è molto eterogeneo. L'inizio di tale percorso professionale può essere inquadrato temporalmente nei primi anni della mia adolescenza, e coincide con una esperienza di apprendistato svolta presso un'officina meccanica. 

  The nature of my businesses underwent the first change when I started leveraging my computer science studies, starting to work as a software analyst and developer. Subsequently, taking advantage of a fortuitous opportunity, I specialized in the design and construction of complete artificial vision systems, and in the implementation of image processing algorithms for industrial applications, that is machine vision. 

  La natura delle mie attività ha subito il primo cambiamento quando ho iniziato a sfruttare i miei studi di informatica, iniziando a lavorare come analista e sviluppatore software. Successivamente, sfruttando una opportunità fortuita, mi sono specializzato nella progettazione e realizzazione di sistemi di visione artificiale completi, e nella implementazione algoritmi di elaborazione delle immagini per applicazioni industriali, cioè machine vision. 

  A few years ago my career path underwent a further mutation, allowing me to measure my aptitude for unexplored tasks up to that moment. The professionalism I am talking about coincides with the one I cover at the time of writing, and consists in the role of Technical Proposal for an important multinational, world leader in the railway diagnostics sector. 

  Qualche anno or sono il mio percorso professionale ha subito una ulteriore mutazione, permettendomi di misurare la mia attitudine per compiti inesplorati fino a quel momento. La professionalità di cui sto parlando coincide con quella che ricopro nel momento in cui sto scrivendo, e consiste nel ruolo di Technical Proposal per un'importante multinazionale, leader mondiale nel settore della diagnostica ferroviaria. 

  The abundance of knowledge that this variety of experiences has given me in the past years, and the memory of the pleasure one feels in experiencing new challenges, keeps alive in me the desire that the future can offer me the opportunity to take paths that are still unexplored.

  La abbondanza di conoscenza che questa varietà di esperienze mi ha donato negli anni ormai trascorsi, ed il ricordo del piacere che si prova nel sperimentare nuove sfide, mantiene vivo in me il desiderio che il futuro possa offrirmi la possibilità di intraprendere strade ancora inesplorate.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Soft Computing.

 Due to the growing complexity of modern problems, a new problem solving approach, known as "soft computing", is becoming increasingly popular, as opposed to the traditional approach which was characterized by rigid programming, deterministic models and exact results and which, precisely for this reason, was identified with the name of "hard computing". With the growing importance of computational intelligence in diverse application areas, soft computing is fast gaining importance and popularity. The purpose of this article is to introduce the reader to the fundamental concepts of soft computing as a methodological tool.

  A causa della crescente complessità dei problemi moderni, un nuovo approccio di risoluzione dei problemi, noto col nome di “soft computing”, sta prendendo sempre più piede, in contrapposizione all’approccio tradizionale che era caratterizzato da una programmazione rigida, da modelli deterministici e risultati esatti e che, proprio per questo motivo, era identificato col nome di “hard computing”. Con la crescente importanza dell'intelligenza computazionale in diverse aree applicative, il soft computing sta rapidamente guadagnando importanza e popolarità. Lo scopo di questo articolo è introdurre il lettore ai concetti fondamentali del soft computing come strumento metodologico.

 The current trend is to resort to techniques that aim to evaluate, decide, control and calculate in an imprecise and vague context by emulating, and using the ability of human beings to perform the aforementioned activities on the basis of their experience. The term "soft computing" identifies the combination of these techniques, to distinguish them from "rigid" and conventional ones. Infact, the obvious answer to "what is soft computing?" question is: "soft computing is computing which is not hard".

  The phrase 'soft computing' was coined by Lotfi A. Zadeh, a pioneer in this field, in the early 1990s.

 La tendenza attuale è quella di fare ricorso a tecniche che si prefiggono di valutare, decidere, controllare e calcolare in un ambito impreciso e vago emulando, e utilizzando la capacità degli esseri umani di eseguire le suddette attività sulla base della loro esperienza. Il termine "soft computing" identifica la combinazione di queste tecniche, per distinguerle da quelle "rigide" e convenzionali. In effetti, la risposta ovvia alla domanda "che cos'è il soft computing?" è: "il soft computing è un computing che non è hard".

  L'espressione "soft computing" è stata coniata da Lotfi A. Zadeh, un pioniere in questo campo, all'inizio degli anni '90.

The complex things.

Le cose complesse.

  First of all let us reflect on the adjective "complex", and ask ourselves what is meant by "complex" system, or problem. Well, complex is something whose composition is difficult to understand, whose behavior and cause / effect relationships are difficult to predict with certainty. 

  Whenever we are faced with a system, or a problem, with these characteristics, we are dealing with something complex.

  Innanzitutto riflettiamo sull'aggettivo "complesso", e chiediamoci cosa si intende per sistema o problema "complesso". Orbene, complesso è qualcosa di cui è difficile comprenderne la composizione, di cui è difficile prevedere con certezza il comportamento e le relazioni causa/effetto. 

  Ogni volta che ci troviamo di fronte ad un sistema, oppure un problema, con queste caratteristiche, ci stiamo occupando di qualcosa di complesso.

But how is a complex problem solved? Can we use the techniques we use for solving conventional problems?

   One of the first steps of traditional problem solving is to isolate the components of the system and focus individually on their analysis and resolution. By breaking down the original problem into simpler problems, it simplifies its analysis, management and resolution. This simplifies the problem by breaking it down into yes on the analysis of the system components.

   Well, the premise we made about the traditional approach is that the system can be divided into independent components, each of which is characterized by a known and unique behavior. Unfortunately this premise is not verified for complex systems for which the various components are correlated and indivisible.

  Ma come si risolve un problema complesso? Si possono usare le tecniche che utilizziamo per la risoluzione di problemi convenzionali? 

  Uno dei primi passi del problem solving tradizionale è quello di isolare le componenti del sistema e focalizzarsi individualmente sulla loro analisi e risoluzione. Suddividendo il problema originale in problemi più semplici se ne semplifica l'analisi, la gestione e la soluzione.  In questo modo si semplifica il problema scomponendolo in si  sull'analisi delle componenti del sistema.

  Ebbene la premessa che abbiamo fatto a proposito dell'approccio tradizionale è che il sistema sia suddivisibile in componenti indipendenti, ognuna delle quali sia caratterizzata da un comportamento noto ed univoco. Purtroppo questa premessa non è verificata per i sistemi complessi per i quali invece le varie componenti sono correlate ed indivisibili.

  § The industry 1.0. First industrial revolution. Mechanization of production with hydraulic power and steam. The beginning of this era can be identified with the first mechanical loom built in 1784. Industry 1.0 corresponds to a manufacturing revolution with respect to the use of energy: the invention of the steam engine, in fact, allows factories to abandon mills and introduce a mechanization of production in the name of greater speed and power.
  La fabbrica 1.0. Prima rivoluzione industriale. Meccanizzazione della produzione con energia idraulica e vapore. Industry 3.0 summarizes the entry into the factory of the first generation ICT: information technology and electronics further increase the levels of automation not only in the production but also (and above all) in the organization. The infrastructures are diversified and new processes are launched which, under the banner of progressive digitalization, diversify and facilitate the work of people by improving the quality of production.

Informatizzazione degli uffici e automatizzazione della produzione. L'inizio di questa era può essere identificato con la realizzazione del primo PLC, il Modicon 084 nel 1969. L’industria 3.0 riassume l’ingresso in fabbrica dell’ICT di prima generazione: informatica ed elettronica incrementano ulteriormente i livelli di automazione non solo nell’ambito produttivo ma anche (e soprattutto) organizzativo. Hardware Programming

Programmazione dell'Hardware.

  There are several ways to program electronic boards in order to build robots or wearable devices, to manage lighting systems or to synthesize music, to automate the home or to build games. You can operate in an intimate way by wiring the logic directly into the board, as it happens in FPGA programming. Or it is possible to operate at increasing levels of abstraction passing through the programming of micro-controllers (for example PIC and Arduino) and reaching levels that are close to computer science, that is to the programming of electronic computers by means of high-level languages. Higher level programming is represented for example by programming single board PCs.
  Esistono diversi modi per programmare le schede elettroniche al fine di costruire robot oppure dispositivi indossabili (wearable devices), per gestire impianti di luci o per sintetizzare la musica, per automatizzare la casa oppure per costruire giochi. Si può operare in modo intimo cablando la logica direttamente nella scheda, così come avviene nella programmazione delle FPGA. Oppure si può operare a livelli crescenti di astrazione passando per la programmazione dei micro-controllori (per esempio PIC e Arduino) e raggiungendo livelli che si avvicinano all'informatica, ossia alla programmazione dei calcolatori elettronici per mezzo di linguaggi ad alto livello. La programmazione a più alto livello è rappresentata ad esempio dalla programmazione delle single board PC.

The oldest programming paradigm.

  Imperative programming (from the Latin imperare = to command) is the oldest programming paradigm. According to this paradigm, a program consists of a clearly defined sequence of instructions given to a computer.
   The source code of imperative languages brings together the commands that determine what the computer must do, and when, to achieve the desired result. The values used in the variables are changed during program runtime. To control commands, control structures such as loops or branches are integrated into the code.

  La programmazione imperativa (dal latino imperare = comandare) è il più antico paradigma di programmazione. Secondo questo paradigma, un programma consiste in una sequenza chiaramente definita di istruzioni date a un computer.

  Il codice sorgente dei linguaggi imperativi mette insieme i comandi che determinano cosa deve essere fatto dal computer, e quando, per raggiungere il risultato desiderato. I valori utilizzati nelle variabili vengono modificati durante il runtime del programma. Per controllare i comandi, vengono integrate nel codice strutture di controllo come loop o rami.

   The alternative to the imperative paradigm is the "declarative" paradigm, whose key difference is that, unlike "imperative" programming which focuses on the HOW, "declarative" programming focuses on the WHAT. Unlike imperative programming languages, which are written as a step-by-step guide (HOW) for the computer, in declarative programming, the desired end result (WHAT) is directly described. Using a culinary metaphor, we can say that imperative languages are similar to recipes, while declarative languages are similar to an explanatory photo of the dish already prepared.

  L'alternativa al paradigma imperativo è rappresentato dal paradigma "dichiarativo",  la cui differenza fondamentale consiste nel fatto che, a differenza della programmazione "imperativa" che si concentra sul COME, la programmazione "dichiarativa" si concentra sul COSA. A differenza dei linguaggi di programmazione imperativi, che sono scritti come una guida passo passo (COME) per il computer, nella programmazione dichiarativa, viene descritto direttamente il risultato finale desiderato (COSA). Utilizzando una metafora culinaria, possiamo affermare che i linguaggi imperativi sono assimilabili alle  ricette, mentre i linguaggi dichiarativi sono assimilabili ad una foto esplicativa della pietanza già preparata.

I.N.R.I. When a man of our times, trapped on Golgotha, yells the English phrase "It's a lie! It's a lie! Drop me!", It is understandable that the witnesses interpret it as a distortion of the Aramaic "Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachthani". To know how that scream could have come about, however, we will have to land in Palestine in 28 AD. together with Karl Glogauer, meet the sect of the Essenes and, shortly after, none other than the Holy Family. But this is only the beginning: the imagination has rarely produced such a radical and extreme book, winner of the 1967 Nebula prize in its magazine version.

British. Among his most famous works, the cycle of Jerry Cornelius (started with "Final Program", 1969, from which the film "Alpha Omega the beginning of the end" by Robert Fuest was taken) and the Eternal Champion. Both I.N.R.I. (which marks its debut in 1966), as well as the subsequent "The black corridor" and the "Sailing ship of the ice".

 Michael Moorcock. Michael Moorcock è nato a Londra nel 1939. Considerato uno dei massimi autori inglesi di sf e fantasy ( genere cui ha dato la celebre saga di Elric di Menibone), è stato anche il direttore della rivista "New Worlds" e il fondatore della New Wave britannica. Tra le sue opere più celebri, il ciclo di Jerry Cornelius (iniziato con "Programma finale", 1969, da cui è stato tratto il film "Alfa Omega il principio della fine" di Robert Fuest) e del Campione eterno. The movie "Matrix".

Il film "Matrix".

  The work "Violence of the virtual and integral reality" by Jean Baudrillard had a fundamental influence on the brothers Andy and Larry Wachowski, who are the authors and directors of the Matrix trilogy, even if the French thinker resoundingly rejected any hypothesis of collaboration. with the production of the film, not appreciating the project at all.

  L'opera "Violence of the virtual and integral reality" di Jean Baudrillard ha avuto una fondamentale influenza sui fratelli Andy e Larry Wachowski, che sono gli autori ed i registi della trilogia di Matrix, anche se il pensatore francese bocciò sonoramente ogni ipotesi di collaborazione con la produzione del film, non apprezzando per nulla il progetto.

  “What do you mean real? Give me a definition of the real, ”Morpheus asks a bewildered Neo in one of the topical scenes from the film The Matrix. Neo, who has not yet become the Chosen One to lead the rebellion against the machines, is confused by the question.

  “Che vuol dire reale? Dammi una definizione di reale”, chiede Morpheus a uno smarrito Neo in una delle scene topiche del film Matrix. Neo, che ancora non è diventato l’Eletto che guiderà la ribellione contro le macchine, è confuso dalla domanda.

  Neo, after swallowing the red pill that allows him to see beyond the digital simulation in which humanity lives unaware (while it is actually imprisoned in factory farms from which the machines draw energy), he has to deal with the new reality that is being brought to him. para in front. Indeed: with "the desert of reality", as Morpheus himself says.

  Neo, dopo aver ingoiato la pillola rossa che gli permette di vedere oltre la simulazione digitale in cui l’umanità vive inconsapevole (mentre è in verità imprigionata in allevamenti intensivi da cui le macchine traggono energia), deve fare i conti con la nuova realtà che gli si para davanti. Anzi: con “il deserto della realtà”, come dice proprio Morpheus.

  The same term, "desert of reality" appears in the first pages of Simulacra e impostura, another essay by the philosopher Jean Baudrillard, published for the first time in France in 1981. This book is explicitly mentioned in The Matrix: the same Neo, before meeting Morpheus uses it as a hiding place to hide illegal software he sells on the black market. If Neo, instead of using the book as a hiding place, had read it, he would certainly have caught the quote about the "desert of reality" and would have become aware of the Matrix that surrounded him a little in advance.

  Lo stesso termine, "deserto della realtà" compare nelle prime pagine di Simulacri e impostura, altro saggio del filosofo Jean Baudrillard, pubblicato per la prima volta in Francia nel 1981. Questo libro è esplicitamente citato in Matrix: lo stesso Neo, prima di incontrare Morpheus, lo utilizza come nascondiglio in cui celare i software illegali che vende sul mercato nero. Se Neo, invece di utilizzare il libro come nascondiglio, lo avesse letto, avrebbe certamente colto la citazione sul “deserto della realtà” ed avrebbe preso coscienza  con un po’ di anticipo della Matrice che lo circondava.

Decision-Making.

Processo decisionale.

  In everyday life, decisions are made continuously: in some cases they are automatic, while in other cases making a decision can be a longer, more demanding and complex. This is why decision making is important. Because it plays a decisive role in the most important events in life, such as choosing a course of study, accepting a job offer, declaring one's love.

  Nella vita di tutti i giorni le decisioni vengono prese continuamente: in alcuni casi sono automatiche, mentre in altri casi prendere una decisione può essere un processo più lungo, impegnativo e complesso. Per questo motivo il processo decisionale è importante. Perché esso gioca un ruolo determinante negli eventi più importanti della vita, come per esempio scegliere il percorso di studi, accettare una proposta di lavoro, dichiarare il proprio amore.

  A typical example in which "decision making" is practiced is at the end of the Problem Solving process, and specifically in the case in which it does not converge towards a single solution, but towards a series of solutions, all possible and which seem equivalent. In this case, it is necessary to choose the solution that best suits our purposes, or the most effective solution, or the cheapest one. Very often these objectives are in conflict with each other, and therefore the decision will be about finding a compromise between them.

  Un esempio tipico in cui si esercita il "decision making" è al termine del processo di Problem Solving, e specificatamente nel caso in cui esso non converga verso una soluzione unica, bensì verso una serie di soluzioni, tutte possibili e che sembrano equivalenti. In questo caso, occorre scegliere quella la soluzione più adatta ai nostri fini, oppure la soluzione più efficace, oppure quella più economica. Il processo decisionale (decision making) riguarda il modo in cui si arriva alla decisione.

  1. C'è un primo passo importante, detto “consapevolezza decisionale”, in cui ci si rende conto che occorre prendere una decisione.

  2. Il processo decisionale può includere la raccolta di informazioni, la creazione di opzioni, la discussione di potenziali azioni e le loro implicazioni.

  3. Il processo decisionale può implicare la decisione di chi deve prendere la decisione o essere coinvolto nel processo decisionale. 

  4. Il processo decisionale include la valutazione delle conseguenze di ognuna delle decisioni opzionali, sia come azioni, rischi o benefici.

  Se vogliamo pubblicare dei contenuti sul web, ossia delle pagine web, è necessario conoscere un semplice linguaggio che permette di scrive le pagine web che generalmente sono degli ipertesti, ossia dei testi che al loro interno contengono dei collegamenti (link) utili per indirizzare il lettore verso altre pagine web. Il linguaggio di cui parliamo è l'HyperText Markup Language, noto in forma abbreviata con l'acronimo HTML.

Un linguaggio di marcatura (markup) è un insieme di regole convenzionali che descrivono come un testo deve essere rappresentato sul layout di un documento.

  Quando l'applicazione preposta alla visualizzazione di una pagina web, detto browser, apre un file HTML individua all'interno del testo i codici HTML e li usa per definire il layout della pagina, inserire immagini, o creare link per altre pagine.

Artificial Life.
La vita artificiale.

  Man has always questioned the nature of life and the processes that characterize living organisms, to understand how, through evolutionary processes, life forms have reached their current complexity, albeit starting from the primordial soup of unicellular life forms. The extensive use of electronic computers and of simulation and evolutionary computing programs (genetic algorithms, genetic programming, swarm intelligence, ant colony optimization), agent-based models and cellular automata have allowed to scholars to observe the behavior of real organisms and ecosystems. From this interaction between simulation, evolutionary research and computer science arises the Artificial Life (or Alife from its abbreviation).

   L’uomo da sempre si è interrogato sulla natura della vita e dei processi che caratterizzano gli organismi viventi, per comprendere come, attraverso i processi evolutivi, le forme di vita hanno raggiunto la complessità attuale seppur partendo dal brodo primordiale di forme di vita unicellulari. L’uso estensivo di calcolatori elettronici e di programmi di simulazione e di calcolo evolutivo (algoritmi genetici, programmazione genetica, intelligenza di sciame, ottimizzazione basata sui formicai), i modelli basati su agenti e gli automi cellulari hanno permesso agli studiosi di osservare il comportamento di organismi ed ecosistemi reali. Da questa interazione tra simulazione, ricerca evoluzionista ed informatica nasce l’Artificial Life (o Alife dalla sua abbreviazione).

  As you can see, this virtuous experimentation environment is obtained through the contamination of information technology with biology, that is, with the mechanisms of life. But the most fascinating aspect of the question is the reverse process, that is, the contamination of biological reality with virtual creatures obtained as a result of the process of evolution and simulation of artificial life. 

  The most fascinating aspect of these systems lies in the fact that they are able to provide unpredictable and incomprehensible solutions to the same programmers who implemented the mechanism.

  Come si può notare questo virtuoso ambiente di sperimentazione è ottenuto attraverso la contaminazione dell’informatica con la biologia, ossia con i meccanismi della vita. Ma l’aspetto più affascinate della questione è costituito dal processo inverso, ossia dalla contaminazione della realtà biologica con creature virtuali ottenute come risultato del processo di evoluzione e simulazione della vita artificiale. 

  L’aspetto più affascinante di questi sistemi risiede nel fatto che essi sono in grado di fornire soluzioni imprevedibili ed incomprensibili agli stessi programmatori che hanno implementato il meccanismo.

  Currently, industrial plants are subject to constant changes to adapt to production strategies. The simulation in this scenario lends itself as a useful decision support tool (decision making) as it allows you to verify the effectiveness of the strategy to be implemented on a model. Regardless of the nature of the system, be it a production line or a distribution network, it can be modeled and subjected to simulation analysis, allowing you to estimate performance, compare alternative solutions, detect problems.

   Attualmente gli impianti industriali sono soggetti a continui cambiamenti per adattarsi alle strategie di produzione.
La simulazione in questo scenario si presta come utile strumento di supporto alle decisioni (decision making) in quanto permette di verificare su un modello l’efficacia della strategia che si intende attuare. Indipendentemente dalla natura del sistema, sia esso una linea di produzione oppure una rete di distribuzione, esso può essere modellato e sottoposto all’analisi della simulazione permettendo di stimare le prestazioni, confrontare soluzioni alternative, rilevare problemi. 

  The result of the optimization and simulation process is the optimal layout, i.e. the composition and organization of the plant resources that produce the best results. The complexity of the simulation depends on the level of detail of the real system model that you decide to use. Therefore, where possible, it is advisable to consider only the fundamental characteristics for the phenomenon being examined. For systems such as productive ones, it is essential to observe the evolution of the state of the system at certain instants and not in the temporal (or spatial) continuum. The evolution of the state of the system depends on the occurrence of some events, and in the moments that elapse between one of these events and another event, nothing significant happens for the phenomenon that I have decided to observe with my simulation study. And therefore it would be a useless waste of time and computing resources to go and observe the system in these intermediate moments.

  Il risultato del processo di ottimizzazione e simulazione è costituito dal layout ottimo, ossia dalla composizione ed organizzazione delle risorse dell’impianto che produce i migliori risultati. La complessità della simulazione dipende dal livello di dettaglio del modello del sistema reale che si decide di utilizzare. Quindi, ove è possibile, è consigliabile considerare solo le caratteristiche fondamentali per il fenomeno che si sta esaminando. Per sistemi come quelli produttivi è indispensabile osservare l’evoluzione dello stato del sistema in determinati istanti e non nel continuo temporale (o spaziale). L’evolversi dello stato del sistema dipende dal verificarsi di alcuni eventi, e negli istanti che intercorrono tra uno di questi eventi ed un’altro evento non accade nulla di significativo per il fenomeno che ho deciso di osservare con il mio studio di simulazione. E quindi sarebbe un inutile spreco di tempo e di risorse di calcolo andare ad osservare il sistema in questi istanti intermedi.

  Quality control in a production process can be used both on incoming raw materials and on finished products out of the industrial plant.

  Il controllo di qualità in un processo produttivo può essere impiegato sia sulle materie prime in ingresso, sia sui prodotti finiti in uscita dall'impianto industriale.

  The incoming quality control consists in verifying the compliance of the products with certain pre-assigned quality parameters, in order to process only the compliant products and avoid the loading of non-compliant products

Some of the possible checks using an artificial vision system are the following:

- Compliance with dimensional tolerances;

- Identification of any broken or incorrectly separated products

- Presence of all components for assembled products (cap, lid, label)

  Il controllo di qualità in ingresso consiste nella verifica della rispondenza dei prodotti a determinati parametri qualitativi pre-assegnati, al fine di processare solo i prodotti conformi ed evitare il carico dei prodotti non conformi
Alcune delle verifiche possibili tramite un sistema di visione artificiale sono le seguenti:
- Rispondenza alle tolleranze dimensionali;
- Individuazione di eventuali prodotti rotti o non correttamente separati
- Presenza di tutti i componenti per prodotti assemblati (tappo, coperchio, etichetta)

  The control of the outgoing quality, that is applied to the products of the production process, consists in verifying the correctness of the process, in order to place on the market only products that are correct and compliant with the quality specifications.

Some of the possible checks using an artificial vision system are the following:

- Compliance with the dimensional, shape and color tolerances of the product;

- Identification of any missing products

- verification of the correctness of picking / depositing operations performed by robots

  Il controllo della qualità in uscita, ossia applicato ai prodotti del processo produttivo, consiste nella verifica della correttezza del processo, al fine di immettere sul mercato solo prodotti corretti e conformi alle specifiche di qualità.

Alcune delle verifiche possibili tramite un sistema di visione artificiale sono le seguenti:

- Rispondenza alle tolleranze dimensionali, di forma e di colore del prodotto;

- Individuazione di eventuali prodotti mancanti

- verifica della correttezza di operazioni di presa/deposito eseguite da robot

  Attraverso il controllo di qualità, per esempio, si può controllare la frutta in ingresso ad un processo di packaging, per separare i frutti sani da quelli marci (selezione), ed a valle di questo primo controllo si può eseguire sui frutti sani una classificazione in riferimento alla loro caratteristiche ed ai criteri di  qualità, come per esempio il calibro, la gradevolezza del loro aspetto, le loro caratteristiche organolettiche e nutrizionali, il loro grado di maturazione.

Competenze lavorative future.

  We are all aware that the world of work is constantly evolving, that new technologies have appeared and that these technologies will affect the way we work in the coming years. Much of our previous knowledge will no longer be useful because it is overtaken by new market trends, new technologies and ways of working.

  The only way to survive this real revolution in the world of work unscathed is to observe these changes, predict what will happen in the next few years, and draw up a medium and long-term updating plan for one's professional skills.

 Tutti quanti noi siamo coscienti che il mondo del lavoro è in continua evoluzione, che nuove tecnologie si sono affacciate e che tali tecnologie condizioneranno nei prossimi anni il modo di lavorare. Buona parte delle nostre conoscenze pregresse non saranno più utili perché sorpassate dalle nuove tendenze del mercato, dalle nuove tecnologie e modo di lavorare.
  L’unico modo per sopravvivere indenni a questa vera e propria rivoluzione del mondo del lavoro è quello di osservare questi cambiamenti, prevedere quello che accadrà prevedibilmente nei prossimi anni, e stilare un piano di aggiornamento a medio e lungo termine delle proprie competenze professionali.

  The American research center "Institute for the Future" has carried out a study that takes stock of the social and economic phenomena that will guide the change in the world of work in the coming years. 

  Il centro di ricerche americano "Institute for the Future" ha realizzato uno studio che fa il punto sui fenomeni sociali ed economici che guideranno il cambiamento del mondo del lavoro nei prossimi anni.

  The Institute for the Future (IFTF) is a non-profit strategic research group based in Palo Alto that has been working for 40 years to identify emerging trends that will transform the market and society in the era of globalization.

  In 2011, IFTF researchers published a report entitled "Future Work Skills 2020" aimed at identifying the professional competences (skills) that will allow us to be successful in this new scenario of the world of work.

  L’Institute for the Future (IFTF) è un gruppo di ricerca strategica no profit con sede a Palo Alto che opera da 40 anni all'identificazione dei trend emergenti che trasformeranno il mercato e la società nell'era della globalizzazione.
  Nel 2011 i ricercatori dell'IFTF hanno pubblicato un rapporto intitolato "Future Work Skills 2020" volto ad individuare le competenze professionali (skills) che permetteranno di avere successo in questo nuovo scenario del mondo del lavoro.

  Global connectivity, smart machines, new media, increasing longevity, the computational world and new forms of production and value creation are the main factors that are reshaping the way we think about work, work itself and skills we will need to contribute productively in the near future. 

  The IFTF report analyzes the key factors that are reshaping the job landscape and identifies key job skills that will be needed in the future. It is difficult to predict what specific job categories will characterize the future. Inevitably, many of the job predictions will turn out to be wrong, however it is worth reflecting and betting on the skills and abilities that will likely be required in most jobs and work contexts.

  La connettività globale, le macchine intelligenti, i nuovi media, la crescente longevità, il mondo computazionale e le nuove forme di produzione e creazione di valore, sono i principali fattori che stanno rimodellando il modo in cui pensiamo al lavoro, il lavoro stesso e le competenze di cui avremo bisogno per contribuire in modo produttivo nel prossimo futuro.

  Il rapporto dell'IFTF analizza i fattori chiave che stanno rimodellando il panorama del lavoro e identifica le competenze lavorative chiave saranno necessarie nel futuro. E' difficile prevedere quali saranno le specifiche categorie di lavoro che caratterizzeranno il futuro. Inevitabilmente molte delle previsioni sui lavori si riveleranno errate, tuttavia conviene riflettere e scommettere sulle competenze e le abilità che prevedibilmente saranno richieste nella maggior parte dei lavori e dei contesti lavorativi.
