The problems facing the world of research and industry are becoming more and more complex day by day. The ability to solve complex problems and make new scientific discoveries depends on the availability of increasingly powerful automatic computing systems. Some of the fields that can benefit from these computing systems are: economics, energy, meteorology, medicine, biology, materials research, astronomy, physics, chemistry, the study of disasters. natural, financial risks. The typical problems of all these disciplines require the execution of a large amount of calculations in useful times, that is, reasonably short for the result to be effectively usable. For this reason, in modern computer science, all those applications that aim at the creation of high-performance computing systems are becoming increasingly important. We are talking about the so-called "High Performance Computing" (briefly HPC).

{ I problemi con cui il mondo della ricerca e dell’industria si misurano diventano di giorno in giorno sempre più complessi. La capacità di risolvere problemi complessi e di fare nuove scoperte scientifiche dipende dalla disponibilità di sistemi di calcolo automatico sempre più potenti. Alcuni dei campi che possono trarre benefici da questi sistemi di calcolo sono: l’economia, l’energia, la meteorologia, la medicina, la biologia, la ricerca sui materiali, l’astronomia, la fisica, la chimica, lo studio delle catastrofi naturali, i rischi finanziari. I problemi tipici di tutte queste discipline richiedono l’esecuzione di una elevata quantità di calcoli in tempi utili, ossia ragionevolmente brevi affinché il risultato sia effettivamente fruibile. Per questo motivo, nell’Informatica moderna, stanno assumendo una importanza sempre crescente tutte quelle applicazioni che mirano alla realizzazione di sistemi di calcolo ad alte prestazioni. Stiamo parlando del così detto "Supercalcolo". }
