Futuro incerto.
The speed and depth with which sciences, technologies, industry, society, the world of work and business change and evolve today makes the "future" uncertain. In fact, it has become less predictable than in past times, when almost everything remained unchanged within the same generation; one could carry out the same profession for the entire duration of one's life; even, frequently, the children, routed by their parents, embarked on the same professional path.
La rapidità e la profondità con cui oggi cambiano ed evolvono le scienze, le tecnologie, l’industria, la società, il mondo del lavoro e del business, rende il “futuro” incerto. Infatti esso è diventato meno prevedibile rispetto ai tempi passati, quando nell’arco di una stessa generazione restava quasi tutto invariato; si riusciva svolgere la stessa professione per l'intera durata della vita; addirittura, frequentemente, i figli, instradati dai genitori, intraprendevano lo stesso percorso professionale.
Today all this is unthinkable, indeed it happens more and more frequently that you have to question your professionalism and evaluate the opportunity for a change. Although this environment of change may seem exciting, it must be admitted that at the same time one feels destabilized and uncomfortable because of the uncertainty about the future, with which one must resign oneself to live with from now on.
Oggi tutto questo è impensabile, anzi sempre più frequentemente accade di dover mettere in discussione la propria professionalità e di valutare l’opportunità di un cambiamento. Sebbene questo ambiente di cambiamento possa sembrare eccitante, bisogna ammettere che contestualmente ci si sente destabilizzati e si prova disagio a causa dell’incertezza sul futuro, con cui bisogna rassegnarsi a convivere d’ora in poi.
Recently, to identify and represent this uncontrollable and increasingly complex condition, the term VUCA has been coined, which summarizes the terms Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity.
Recentemente, per identificare e rappresentare questa condizione incontrollabile ed a complessità crescente si è coniato il termine VUCA che sintetizza i termini Volatilità (Volatility), Incertezza (Uncertainty), Complessità (Complexity) e Ambiguità (Ambiguity).
- Volatility refers to the nature and dynamics of changes that can be characterized by fluctuations and turbulence. Volatility measures the speed at which changes occur.
Volatilità si riferisce alla natura e alle dinamiche dei cambiamenti che può essere caratterizzato da fluttuazioni e turbolenze. La volatilità misura la velocità con cui avvengono i cambiamenti.
- Uncertainty indicates the extent to which the future can be predicted with certainty. Uncertainty is linked to the inability to understand what is happening, that is, to be aware of the changes taking place in the surrounding environment. The more uncertain the world, the harder it is to predict.
Incertezza indica la misura con cui è possibile prevedere con sicurezza il futuro. All’incertezza si lega l’incapacità di comprendere cosa sta succedendo, di essere cioè consapevoli dei cambiamenti in atto nell’ambiente circostante. Più il mondo è incerto, più è difficile da prevedere.
- Complexity. A context is all the more complex the more the factors to consider are numerous, different from each other, and the relationships between the elements are different. A greater interconnection, in fact, increases the complexity of the system; this makes it difficult to analyze the overall amount of information. The more complex the world, the harder it will be to analyze.
Complessità. Un contesto è tanto più complesso quanto più i fattori da considerare sono numerosi, diversi tra loro, e diverse sono le relazioni tra gli elementi. Una maggiore interconnessione, infatti, aumenta la complessità del sistema; questo rende arduo analizzare la quantità complessiva di informazione. Più il mondo è complesso, più difficile sarà da analizzare.
- Ambiguity The lack of clarity of a phenomenon does not allow to interpret it adequately. A situation is ambiguous when the information is incomplete, contradictory or not sufficiently accurate to reach conclusions. That is, it is a “nuanced” phenomenon, that is fuzzy, that is, neither true nor false, neither white nor black.
Ambiguità. La mancanza di chiarezza di un fenomeno non consente di interpretarlo adeguatamente. Una situazione è ambigua quando l’informazione è incompleta, contraddittoria o non sufficientemente accurata per giungere a delle conclusioni. Si tratta cioè di un fenomeno “sfumato”, cioè fuzzy, ossia né vero e né falso, né bianco e neanche nero.
