La vita artificiale.
Man has always questioned the nature of life and the processes that characterize living organisms, to understand how, through evolutionary processes, life forms have reached their current complexity, albeit starting from the primordial soup of unicellular life forms. The extensive use of electronic computers and of simulation and evolutionary computing programs (genetic algorithms, genetic programming, swarm intelligence, ant colony optimization), agent-based models and cellular automata have allowed to scholars to observe the behavior of real organisms and ecosystems. From this interaction between simulation, evolutionary research and computer science arises the Artificial Life (or Alife from its abbreviation).
L’uomo da sempre si è interrogato sulla natura della vita e dei processi che caratterizzano gli organismi viventi, per comprendere come, attraverso i processi evolutivi, le forme di vita hanno raggiunto la complessità attuale seppur partendo dal brodo primordiale di forme di vita unicellulari. L’uso estensivo di calcolatori elettronici e di programmi di simulazione e di calcolo evolutivo (algoritmi genetici, programmazione genetica, intelligenza di sciame, ottimizzazione basata sui formicai), i modelli basati su agenti e gli automi cellulari hanno permesso agli studiosi di osservare il comportamento di organismi ed ecosistemi reali. Da questa interazione tra simulazione, ricerca evoluzionista ed informatica nasce l’Artificial Life (o Alife dalla sua abbreviazione).

Come si può notare questo virtuoso ambiente di sperimentazione è ottenuto attraverso la contaminazione dell’informatica con la biologia, ossia con i meccanismi della vita. Ma l’aspetto più affascinate della questione è costituito dal processo inverso, ossia dalla contaminazione della realtà biologica con creature virtuali ottenute come risultato del processo di evoluzione e simulazione della vita artificiale.
L’aspetto più affascinante di questi sistemi risiede nel fatto che essi sono in grado di fornire soluzioni imprevedibili ed incomprensibili agli stessi programmatori che hanno implementato il meccanismo.
