Summary. A song can bring an essay back into the limelight which, although it was written fifty years ago, is still very relevant today. In fact, reading it I was amazed to recognize myself in many of his words: feeling the same sensation that one has in observing oneself reflected in a mirror.
Una canzone può riuscire a riportare alle luci della ribalta un saggio che, sebbene sia stato scritto cinquant'anni fa, è ancora attualissimo. Infatti, leggendolo mi sono meravigliato nel riconoscermi in molte delle sue parole: provando la stessa sensazione che si ha nell'osservare se stessi riflessi in uno specchio.

§1. The orange pullover.
Il pullover arancione.
I absent-mindedly watched the Sanremo festival on TV and I was attracted by the orange pullover of a singer whom, until then, I had never seen. I told myself that anyone who had the courage to wear such a pullover on the stage of the main Italian song festival would have deserved to win. Obviously I was not the only one to think this way, because then that bizarre singer really won the race. But the bizarre in that performance was not only the orange pullover and the dancer dressed as a monkey who flanked the singer. In fact, the song and in particular its lyrics are at least as original.
Guardavo distrattamente il festival di Sanremo in TV e mi ha attratto il pullover arancione di un cantante che, fino ad allora, non avevo mai visto. Mi sono detto che chiunque avesse avuto il coraggio di indossare un pullover del genere sul palco della principale rassegna canora italiana avrebbe meritato di vincere. Evidentemente non sono stato l’unico a pensarla in questo modo, perché poi quel bizzarro cantante ha vinto realmente la gara. Ma di bizzarro in quella performance non c’era soltanto il pullover arancione ed il ballerino vestito da scimmione che affiancava il cantante. Infatti, la canzone ed in particolare il suo testo sono quantomeno altrettanto originali.

§2. Occidentali’s Karma.
The winning song of the 2017 edition of Sanremo, regardless of whether you like it or not, has the merit of having brought attention to a book published exactly fifty years ago. The song "Occidentale's Karma" by Francesco Gabbani is a potpourri of quotes: from Shakespeare to Nietzsche, from Heraclitus to Plato, from Marx to Marylin Monroe, but the most important quote is definitely that of the naked monkey which refers to the essay that ethologist Desmond Morris wrote 50 years ago. Morris describes man as a concentrate of instincts that were inherited from apes, their ancestors, except for the hair, lost along the way of evolution, and for the habit of doing what we like without asking why.
La canzone vincitrice dell'edizione 2017 di Sanremo, indipendentemente dal fatto che possa piacere o meno, ha il merito di aver riportato l'attenzione su un libro pubblicato esattamente cinquant'anni fa. La canzone “Occidentali’s Karma” di Francesco Gabbani è un potpourri di citazioni: da Shakespeare a Nietzsche, da Eraclito a Platone, da Marx a Marylin Monroe, ma la citazione più importante, è decisamente quella della scimmia nuda che fa riferimento al saggio che l’etologo Desmond Morris scrisse 50 anni fa. Morris descrive l’uomo come un concentrato di istinti che sono stati ereditati dalle scimmie, loro antenati, tranne che per i peli, persi lungo la strada dell’evoluzione, e per l'abitudine di fare quello che ci piace senza chiederci perché.

Desmond John Morris (Purton, January 24, 1928) is an English zoologist and ethologist, science writer and author of books on human sociobiology. World fame came in 1967 with the publication of the book "The naked monkey": the book is revolutionary for the shocking and at the same time very scientific gaze with which it faces the evolution of human behavior since prehistoric times, analyzing man as you first. Despite being the only hairless monkey (hence the adjective naked), man's behavior is substantially similar to that of other primates. Reprinted numerous times and translated into many languages, the book continues to be a best-seller and thanks to the song by Gabbiani it is currently in great demand in bookstores.
Desmond John Morris (Purton, 24 gennaio 1928) è uno zoologo ed etologo inglese, divulgatore scientifico e autore di libri sulla sociobiologia umana. La fama mondiale arrivò nel 1967 con la pubblicazione del libro "La scimmia nuda": il libro è rivoluzionario per lo sguardo sconvolgente e al contempo molto scientifico con il quale affronta l'evoluzione del comportamento umano sin dalla preistoria, analizzando l'uomo in quanto primate. Pur essendo l'unica scimmia priva di peli (da qui l'aggettivo nuda) il comportamento dell'uomo è sostanzialmente analogo a quello degli altri primati. Ristampato numerose volte e tradotto in molte lingue, il libro continua ad essere un best-seller e grazie alla canzone di Gabbiani è attualmente richiestissimo in libreria.

The Naked Monkey and a Zoological Study of the Human Animal (original title: The Naked Ape). It is a popular book published in 1967 by Desmond Morris that describes the human species through the gaze of an ethologist, that is, with the same gaze that is generally placed on other animals, which led to the birth of sociobiology. book is that the skin is the organ that most distinguishes humans from other primates. In humans, the relative absence
of hair is linked to a need for physical contact, for example between the mother and her child, or as a means of expressing human sexuality.
La scimmia nuda e uno studio zoologico sull'animale uomo (titolo originale: The Naked Ape). E’ un libro divulgativo pubblicato nel 1967 da Desmond Morris che descrive la specie umana attraverso uno sguardo di un etologo, vale a dire, con lo stesso sguardo che si pone generalmente sugli altri animali, che portò alla nascita della sociobiologia. La tesi principale del libro è che la pelle sia l'organo che distingue di più gli esseri umani dagli altri primati. Negli esseri umani, la relativa assenza
di peli è legata ad un bisogno di contatto fisico, per esempio tra la madre e il suo bambino, oppure come mezzo per esprimere la sessualità umana.

At the London Zoo, on a cage, there is a sign that simply states: "This animal is unknown to science". In the cage there is a small black-legged squirrel from Africa. Never before has a black-legged squirrel been found on this continent. Nothing is known about this animal. It has no name. For the zoologist it constitutes an immediate challenge. What is it about his way of life that made him unique? How does it differ from the three hundred and sixty-six living species of squirrels already known and described?
Allo zoo di Londra, su di una gabbia, vi è una targhetta che dichiara semplicemente: "Questo animale è sconosciuto alla scienza". Nella gabbia vi è un piccolo scoiattolo con le zampe nere, proveniente dall'Africa. Prima d'ora in questo continente non era mai stato trovato uno scoiattolo con le gambe nere. Di questo animale non si sa nulla. Non ha nome. Per lo zoologo esso costituisce una sfida immediata. Che cosa c'è nel suo modo di vivere che lo ha reso unico? In che cosa differisce dalle trecentosessantasei specie viventi di scoiattoli già note e descritte?

Lo scimmione nudo doveva sviluppare la capacità di innamorarsi, in modo da rimanere sessualmente legato ad un solo compagno e da poter formare una coppia.

Il grande numero dei rapporti sessuali che si ha nella nostra specie ovviamente non è inteso per la produzione della prole, ma per consolidare il legame della coppia, elargendo ai due partners una soddisfazione scambievole. Quindi è chiaro che la ripetuta consumazione dell'atto sessuale da parte di una coppia non è una conseguenza sofisticata e decadente della civiltà moderna, ma una sana tendenza evolutiva
Da un punto di vista sociale, lo scimmione cacciatore dovette aumentare il suo impulso a comunicare e a collaborare con i compagni. Le espressioni facciali e i suoni vocali dovettero divenire più complessi.

Lo scimmione cacciatore maschio e la sua femmina furono così obbligati a innamorarsi e a restare fedeli l'uno all'altra. Questa tendenza è molto diffusa presso molti altri gruppi di animali, ma è rara tra i primati. Con ciò si risolsero tre problemi in un colpo solo. Le femmine rimanevano legate e fedeli ai loro maschi metre questi erano lontani a caccia e le gravi rivalità sessuali tra i maschi diminuirono, agevolando così lo sviluppo dello spirito di collaborazione.

Il fatto che l'orgasmo femminile della nostra specie sia unico tra tutti i primati e che sia quasi identico fisiologicamente alle manifestazioni dell'orgasmo maschile, fa pensare che forse, in senso evolutivo, esso sia una reazione 'pseudomaschile'.

È vero che siamo plasmabili e che abbiamo un comportamento opportunistico, ma le forme assunte da questo opportunismo sono contenute entro limiti rigidi. Mettendo in rilievo in questo libro i nostri aspetti biologici, ho cercato di presentare la natura di queste restrizioni. Riconoscendole apertamente e sottomettendoci ad esse, avremo maggiori probabilità di sopravvivere. Ciò non implica un ingenuo "ritorno alla natura", ma vuol dire semplicemente che dovremo adattare i nostri progressi opportunistici intelligenti alle fondamentali esigenze del nostro comportamento. Dobbiamo in qualche modo migliorare come qualità, invece che come semplice quantità. Potremo così continuare a progredire tecnologicamente in modo sensazionale e sbalorditivo senza negare la nostra eredità evolutiva. In caso contrario, i nostri compressi impulsi biologici si accumuleranno fino a far crollare la diga e tutta la nostra complessa esistenza sarà spazzata via dalla piena.

I was initially an Information Technology expert, and later I became an electronic engineer, specializing in industrial Automation. I'm passionate about Artificial intelligence, Virtual Reality, Simulation, and I'm an expert in Artificial Vision applied to industrial Automation. Currently, and starting four years ago, I am employed as a Proposal Engineer at Mer Mec S.p.A. (:::) company. Previously, starting in 2004, I was employed, always at the same company, as a Designer of Artificial Vision Systems and Image Processing Algorithms, applied in particular to Railway Diagnostics.
