iOS (OS stands for Operating System) is the operating system developed by Apple. It was released in the US market in June 2007. iOS is an Apple proprietary operating system and can only run on Apple devices (iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch). It was originally developed for the iPhone, in fact its original name, and until June 2010, was iPhone OS, but is now also used in iPods, iPads and Apple TVs.

iOS is derived from the Berkeley Software Distribution (briefly BSD) operating system which is a derivation of UNIX developed at the University of California Berkeley. BSD since 1988 is represented by a curious mascot: a red demon armed with a pitchfork and wearing sneakers.
iOS è derivato dal sistema operativo Berkeley Software Distribution (brevemente BSD) che è una derivazione di UNIX sviluppata presso l'università della California Berkeley. BSD dal 1988 è rappresentata da una curiosa mascotte: un demone rosso armato di forcone e che indossa scarpe da ginnastica.
iOS uses a Darwin OS based XNU Mach micro kernel. XNU is a recursive acronym that stands for XNU's Not UNIX, meaning "XNU is not Unix". Darwin OS is a full-fledged free operating system. Its name is inspired by the evolutionist scientist of the same name to represent the characteristic of this system as an evolution of the BSD / Unix.
iOS usa un micro kernel XNU Mach basato su Darwin OS. XNU è un acronimo ricorsivo che sta per XNU’s Not UNIX, cioè “XNU non è Unix”. Darwin OS è un sistema operativo a tutti gli effetti libero. Il suo nome si ispira allo scienziato evoluzionista omonimo per rappresentare la caratteristica di questo sistema come evoluzione del BSD/Unix.
