WS-01e Future work skills

Abstract. Have you ever tried to ask you if your skills are compatible with the important transformation that is experiencing the world of work? What are the skills that will enable us to have success in the workplace in the future?

An American research centre, named "Institute for the Future", has produced a study that evaluate the status of the social and economic phenomena, that will drive the changing world of work in the coming years.
The Institute for the Future (IFTF) is a non-profit strategic research group based in Palo Alto that has been operating for 40 years to the identification of emerging trends that will transform the market and society in the era of globalization

The researchers published a report entitled "Future Work Skills 2020" aimed at identifying the skills that will be successful in this new scenario of the workplace.

The six economic and social phenomena that will drive the changing world of work are, predictably, the following:
  1. Increasing lifespans;
  2. Smart machines;
  3. Computational world;
  4. The ecology of new media;
  5. Superstructured organizations;
  6. The globally connected world;

I would anticipate that the professional skills that we must cultivate in order to be prepared for the new era, are the following:
  1. Sense-making : ability to determine the deeper meaning or significance of what is being expressed;
  2. Social Intelligence : ability to connect to others in a deep and direct way, to sense and stimulate reactions and desired interactions;
  3. Novel & Adaptive Thinking : proficiency at thinking and coming up with solutions and responses beyond that which is rote or rule-based;
  4. Cross-cultural competency : ability to operate in different cultural settings;
  5. Computational Thinking : ability to translate vast amounts of data into abstract concepts and to understand data-based reasoning;
  6. New-media Literacy : ability to critically assess and develop content that uses new media forms, and to leverage these media for persuasive communication;
  7. Transdisciplinarity : literacy in and ability to understand concepts across multiple disciplines;
  8. Design mindset: ability to represent and develop tasks and work processes for desired outcomes;
  9. Cognitive load management : ability to discriminate and filter information for importance, and to understand how to maximize cognitive functioning;
  10. Virtual Collaboration : ability to work productively, drive engagement, and demonstrate presence as a member of a virtual team;

But if you want to analyze it with me then do not miss the next post in the series "Work Skills", because we will analyze in detail and we will try together to understand each of these phenomena.
